Community Giving
Reduced isolation means involving yourself in your community. Stephen
Covey says, “to live, to love, to learn, and to leave a legacy” is
what life is all about. Being generous is a value-added investment in
others.
Families at Work can help you construct a community giving and
participation plan that focuses on your strengths and engages the necessary
support services to get you out and about! Some of the most reinforcing
moments I have lived have been in the context of the Richmond Citizens
Police Academy, or through volunteer neighborhood initiatives, or non profit
Board work, Council work, and resulted in knowing more about my neighbors
and how I can touch their lives in positive ways.
Become that bright spot, particularly for neighbors who seem isolated or
somehow disassociated from others, with the help of Families at Work. Learn
about how others who live in close proximity to you are faring, or how the
people who live in more disparate communities confront crime. My home
county, Henrico, is known for integrated recreation programs and
responsiveness like bringing accessible transportation to its citizens. So, open
your eyes, examine your community, volunteer, get engaged!
Families at Work can counsel parents on taking children out into the
world so they can develop an understanding of how blessed their lives are. I
remember taking my son when he was an adolescent to Stuart Circle Parish
feeding program to help out, and he knew by observing our guests in that
program then that dental care was something not every person has access to.
Social engagement has many rewards! Let Families at Work brainstorm ideas
that will get you engaged.
